Development of a municipal energy recovery concept

Client

Ruhrfestspielstadt Recklinghausen

Recklinghausen

Background

In the framework of the Climate Initiative and the associated promotion programs of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), the greenhouse gas emissions shall be reduced by 40% by 2020 and gradually by 80 - 95% by 2050 compared to the levels of the base year 1990. In order to support achieving these goals actively, the city of Recklinghausen has decided to implement an integrated energy recovery concept.

Objective

The aim of the integrated concept, it is to reduce the C02 emissions in the area of heat generation and thereby use possible local renewable energy. In this context measures on climate change through sustainable heat supply are to be identified both in the short and medium term and in the long-term range.

Results

A detailed inventory analysis lists, also in the context of a GIS, the relevant heat sources and heat sinks. Within a subsequent potential analysis, an action plan has been developed with concrete proposals for action to optimize the heat supply in the concerned area. Potentials for use of mine water and wastewater have been particularly analyzed as well as the use of wood as biomass. The municipal properties have been particularly examined concerning the options for a climate-friendly heating supply. The results have been discussed in stakeholder workshops and with the policy makers.
